Students Entertain Seniors for Chanukah

A group of juniors and seniors joined the Rambam Band to entertain at the Hebrew Living Center in Far Rockaway. The boys sang and danced, and created a special ruach among the residents. It was a mini-chagiga from the Rambam boys and the residents were clearly cheered by all the music, dancing and good fun, as they clapped and sang along. The residents were deeply moved and touched by the spirit of caring the Rambam boys brought to their day; some even cried tears of joy and appreciation.

Senior Yaakov Miller described the experience as a "Chanukah gift - not only for the residents, but for us as well. It really made us feel great to share the joy of Chanukah."

Chanukah After-Glow

Each shiur shared in another of Rambam's Chanukah traditions by visiting the home of Rosh HaMesivta Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman and his wife, Renee, for a special Chanukah treat.

Rebbetzin Friedman was bustling with energy as she cooked and served her traditional latkes and sufganiot for the boys.

The boys also enjoyed divrei torah as Rabbi Friedman spoke about the message of Chanukah and how it applies to contemporary society.

Hello from Rambam Alumni

Rambam received an email recently from Avrumi Szlafrok ('02) who bumped into an old classmate, Eli Gross in Israel who is currently a chayal in Tzahal.

"I think our meeting in Israel shows the
spirit of the Mesivta and eretz yisroel," Szlafrok wrote. We agree!

Again, Mazel Tov to softball star #66, a.k.a. Shmuel Aryeh Unger ('98) on his engagement to Samantha Rosenberg. Rabbi Friedman was thrilled to share in the celebration of his engagement (see picture on right).

Mazel Tov to Yehudah Hammer ('01) and his wife Meira on the birth of their baby girl; Aron Gutman ('99) on his engagement; Avi Golombeck ('00) on his engagement to Caryn Friedman; Michael Nadata ('00) on his engagement to Lauren Ratzker; Moshe Seewald ('96) on his engagement to Shani Leidner; Ashi Weisstuck ('01) and his wife Chavi on the birth of their baby girl; Akiva Weinerkur ('01) and his wife Mara on the birth of their baby girl; Avrumi Szlafrok ('02) and his wife Chani on the birth of their baby girl.

Varsity Hockey - Interview with Coach Tzvi Hershenov

The Ravens varsity hockey team lost to Davis Renov Stahler (DRS) 7-3 on Tuesday, January 3rd. With their record now at 5-4, they still have a good shot at making the playoffs, but Coach Tzvi Hershenov was not happy about the team's performance when asked about it in an interview with senior Shlomo Sprung.

"Even though we beat DRS last time, the boys weren't up to it this game," said Hershenov. "They lacked enthusiasm and inspiration. They didn't seem ready to play. They weren't running or moving, and we gave up some silly goals.

"We're going to regroup over the vacation so that we're better prepared for our next game against HANC."

It looks like it's going to be a big playoff push for the Ravens varsity hockey team!

JV Hockey

The JV Hockey Ravens playoff hopes took a setback after a 6-2 loss to Davis Renov Stahler (DRS) on Wednesday, January 4th.

"It was a difficult game, said coach Yaacov Gross, "We were burdened by a lot of penalties, some of which were pretty surprising. The result was that we were playing shorthanded for a significant part of the game, and DRS benefited from this. It's also difficult to develop offensive momentum when you're constantly being forced to play short-handed. I think the game would have looked very different but for all the penalties. Otherwise, I was really happy at the way most of the boys played and exceptionally happy at the way some of them played, which I thought reflected great spirit under very trying circumstances. We still have work to do, but I see great progress in the way the boys play and a great commitment on their part to continue improving."
