Thirteenth Annual Scholarship Dinner - March 4th!

Make your reservations for this year's Scholarship Dinner, which is taking place at The Sands of Atlantic Beach on Saturday evening, March 4th.

The reception begins at 8:15 pm with the dinner following at 9:15 pm. Reservations are $500 per couple.

This year the Mesivta will be honoring Yehuda and Beth Honig as Guests of Honor, Michael and Debbie Block as Parents of the Year, and Jonathan Dyckman as Alumnus of the Year. The Class of '96 will also be honored in recognition of the Tenth Anniversary of Rambam's first graduating class.

Our Guests of Honor, Yehuda and Beth Honig, join a distinguished group of past honorees who, at home and in the workplace, have exemplified a commitment to Torah values and dedicated service on behalf of the Jewish Community. Parents of the Year, Michael and Debbie Block, personify the values that the Rambam Mesivta seeks to impart to its students: a commitment to a Torah-true life, commitment to community and dedication to Klal Yisrael. Alumnus of the Year, Jonathan Dyckman, said: "My years at Rambam were special becuase of the close relationship that I developed with several faculty members. I learned as a high school student that one person can make a difference, and we cannot ignore what goes on in the outside world."

The Scholarship Dinner is a vitally important fundraising event for the Mesivta. Admission to the Mesivta is based upon outstanding midot, motivation to learn and a desire to achieve excellence, regardless of financial background. As such, substantial scholarship dollars have to be made available. Participation in making the Scholarship Dinner a great success enables the Mesivta to continue to accept only the finest talmidim without regard to financial considerations.

The monies raised contributes directly to the expansion of programs that have helped Rambam to earn a reputation as one of the premier boys' yeshiva high schools in the United States.

It's also time to get your ads in for the Scholarship Journal.

Alumni Shabbaton in Israel

Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman, our Rosh HaMesivta, recently returned from a exciting visit to Israel where he organized the annual Shabbaton for our alumni studying in the yeshivot. This year's event was held at Yeshivat Har Etzion (Gush) and included almost 40 alumni, including many of our Shana Bet students, who enjoyed the camaraderie, good food, zmirot and divrei Torah.

During his stay, Rabbi Friedman also visited and gave shiurim at various yeshivot. These visits also serve as essential opportunities to garner information about the latest offerings at these yeshivot so that Rambam can better serve as advisors to current students who are about to make their choice for post-high school education at yeshivot in Eretz Yisrael.

On Motzei Shabbat, Rabbi Friedman and a group of talmidim also paid a shiva visit to the Goodman family upon learning that their young son had tragically died in an accident during military training. The boys were moved by the family's story, and came to better understand the tremendous sacrifice their counterparts are making so that we are able to enjoy the benefits of Eretz Yisroel today.

Substantially all of our graduates continue in post-high school learning programs, most at yeshivot in Eretz Yisrael. Our graduates are actively recruited by these yeshivot, where they are known for their learning skills, outstanding midot and deep-rooted ahavat Eretz Yisrael. Our graduates attend Yeshivot Hesder programs, such as Yeshivat Har Etzion (Gush), Kerem B’Yavneh (KBY) and Shaalvim, but also at American programs, such as Yeshivat Ohr Yerushalayim (OJ) and Mevaseret Yerushalayim. Some also attend Shana Bet institutions, such as Yeshivat Torat Moshe (TOMO), Yeshivat Derech haTalmud (Rav Ilson) and Yeshivat Mir. Following these programs, virtually all of our students return to the States to attend college.

Rambam Students National Merit Finalists

Mazel Tov to Rambam seniors Raffi Holzer and Jonathan Ziring who have been recognized as finalists in the 2006 National Merit Scholarship Competition. They are two of a select group of students in the nation to be so honored this year.

At the end of March, 2006, the students will be notified if they have been selected as winners in the competition. Approximately, 8,200 finalists will be selected as winners and receive a Merit Scholarship® award of a $2,500 scholarship to the college of their choice.

"These are wonderful young men," said Rambam Rosh HaMesivta Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman. "They have demonstrated terrific midos and have excelled in their learning and academic achievement."

“There are only 40 students in the Rambam senior class,” said Professor Lisa Korman, the head of Rambam's College Guidance Department. “To have two of these students selected as finalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program is a remarkable achievement.”

The winners of Merit Scholarship® awards are chosen from the finalist group based on the finalist's academic record, information about the school's curricula and grading system, two sets of test scores, the school official's written recommendation, information about the student's activities and leadership, and the finalist's written essay. Literati

Literati has phonetics that are not so different than other words including literate, literal, literary, and literature. However, what does literati mean, and how is it related to the above words?

If you Google literati then you only get 2,310,000 results, whereas literal gets 56,000,000 results and literature 547,000,000. A New York Times reporter, Anatole Broyard, in 1980 once wrote an article with the headline: “Books: Amid the Literati; Censorship and Wartime.” Other than that, literati seems to be a pretty rare word.

The Concise Oxford English Dictionary has literati as being educated people who are interested in literature. Literati comes from Latin litterati (learned, and is the plural of litteratus ‘acquainted with letters,’ from littera.

All the words above (all these liter- words) go back to the same original Latin root littera, but as Norman W. Schur put it in his 1000 Most Challenging Words, “literacy, literal(ly), literature; they all go back to Latin lit(t)era (letter of the alphabet) and prefer the single I [sic], while letter kept both.”

Webster’s New World Dictionary defines literati a bit differently, as either a) men of letters or b) scholarly or learned people. Literati is related to the word letter, which, as defined Webster’s New World Dictionary, is “a written or printed symbol employed to represent a speech sound or sounds. Letter comes from Middle English lettre, which took it from Old French and comes from Latin littera, letter of the alphabet (and has the same Latin root as literati.

Schur writes, “the literati are miles above the merely literate…..” To add to this, while the literate may not be idiots, they sure are only second compared to the literati, the literate elite.

Sorry literate, but you’ve been replaced by literati.

The Rambam College Bowl teams scored well at their most recent meet on Tuesday, February 7th at Young Israel of Woodmere - varsity went 3-1 and JV scored two victories in their four matches. The meet was hosted by the Stella K. Abraham High School for Girls (SKA).

College Bowl is a Jeopardy-like contest in which teams from different high schools compete against each other in various categories of knowledge.

Do you know the answers to these sample College Bowl questions?

  1. Bataan was the nickname of whose private B-17 aircraft during World War II?
  2. What name did ancient mariners give to areas of calm air north and south of the equator?
  3. What kind of humor is "Queen of Denial" for "Queen of the Nile" - 3 letters.

Baltimore Basketball Tournament

The Rambam varsity basketball team participated in the Third Annual Willner Basketball Tournament in Baltimore from February 3 - 6th.

The Ravens were one of four teams at this annual event which this year included Rambam Baltimore, The Marsha Stern Talmudical Adademy, Yeshiva University for Boys (MTA) and Yeshiva Atlanta.

"Every year, it's a great experience for everyone," said senior Rambam varsity member Daniel Weisblum. "The competition was intense but the best part is just spending time with the kids from the other teams off the court. We spent Shabbos together, we davened together, we shared divrei Torah together. It was a real good time."

Rambam came in third place in the four-team tournament, and is looking forward to participating again next year.

Mrs. Yael Stern-Joseph's Class Becomes "Englightened"

Rambam Global Studies teacher Mrs. Yael Stern-Joseph chose an unusual way to teach the Rambam sophmore AP European History class about the Era of Enlightenment - dress up as a character of the day!

To lead the way, Mrs. Stern Joseph herself donned a costume; she dressed up as, um, er, I don't know, exactly - what do you think?

JV Hockey

In an important home match against the Magen David warriors, the JV Ravens (4-4-1) came back late from a two-goal deficit to win 3-2 in overtime. The JV Ravens are now in the playoffs and are looking to finish with a win against Flatbush next week.

Dovi Hochbaum scored twice in regulation, including the game-tying goal with under a minute to play in the third period. This tally came after coach Yaacov Gross, pulled his goaltender with under 60 seconds left to utilize an extra forward. His gamble paid off after his team got the big tying goal from Hochbaum and Hillel Gross scored in the first 30 seconds of overtime for the victory.

"It was simply a thrilling game," said coach Gross. "We were down 2-1 with less than 2 minutes to play, Dov Hochbaum, our team leader, was on the floor with severe leg cramps, and Sholom Hammer, one of our lead scorers, had just been badly checked and was on the floor as well.

"But our boys never quit, both Dov and Sholom pulled themselves up and went right back in, Jarrod Gordon and Hillel Gross stayed on for extra line shifts, we pulled our goalie and were able to tie the game with 42 seconds left in regulation and then win it in the first 30 seconds of the overtime."
