 Koby
Mandell's Mother Visits Rambam
Rambam Mesivta High School received a powerful message
of how to deal with personal tragedy on Wednesday, March 30th from
Sherri Mandell, the mother of Koby Mandell who was brutally slain
along with his friend Yosef Ishran in Israel in 2001.
Mandell and Ishran were 13 years old when they were stoned to
death in a cave in the rocky countryside that surrounds the Mandell
home in Tekoa, Israel. Their blood was smeared on the walls of
the cave, underscoring the brutality of the terrorists' murder
of the boys. (Read

 Annual
Scholarship Dinner a Huge Success
A great time was had by all at the 12th Annual Rambam Scholarship
Dinner held at The Sands at Atlantic Beach on Sunday evening, April
3rd.
The evening was filled with ruach, dancing, great desserts and,
perhaps, best of all, a condensed program of speeches and presentations
that was only 37 minutes in length!
"It was probably the
most fun I've ever had at a dinner of this type," said Dr. Abe
Herzberg whose son Yisrael is graduating this year, "and
I look forward to coming again next year."
The evening was a great opportunity for parents, seniors, friends,
alumni and staff to gather together to joyfully celebrate the mission
of the Yeshiva. Also, a special thank you is well-deserved by
all the parents and administrators who helped to make the successful
evening
possible.
The honorees of this year's dinner were:
Marvin and Rifky Wertentheil, the recipients of the Kesser
Shem Tov Award; Elliot and Shandy Horowitz, Parents of the Year; and Rabbi
Sol Appleman, Man of the Year.
The funds raised at the event contributes directly to the expansion
of programs that have helped Rambam to earn a reputation as one of
the premier
boys' yeshiva high schools in the United States. The funds will also
help the Mesivta to continue to accept only the finest talmidim without
regard to financial considerations.

Bio Class Conducts Lab at DNA Learning Center
Students from the AP Biology class taught by Dr. Terri Aharon visited
the Dolan DNA Learning Center (DNALC) in Cold Spring Harbor to
conduct a DNA Restriction Analysis experiment
on Thursday, March 31st.
"This experiment demonstrates
that DNA can be precisely manipulated and that it behaves as predicted
by the Watson-Crick structure.
Students use restriction enzymes, the scissors of molecular biologists,
to cut DNA from the bacteriophage lambda. The resulting DNA fragments
are analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis."*
"It was my first time at the DNA Learning Center," said Michael
Pisem, a member of Dr. Aharon's class, "and I was
very impressed with the facility. It's easy to see why advanced
Biological
Research is such a specialized field."
The
student trip and experiment fulfills an important requirement
of the Advanced
Placement Biology curriculum.
The DNALC is a
unique educational resource on Long Island – the nation's
first facility dedicated to improving DNA science education. The
laboratory protocols were developed by the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory's
DNA Literacy Program and emphasize an interactive
approach to the process of discovery.

The Rambam
Chess team wrapped up a successful 4-2 season this year with a
tough playoff semifinal loss against the Torah Academy
of Bergen
County (TABC) on Monday,
March 28th.
"We're very proud of having made the playoffs," said Yosef
Lefkovitz,
freshman member of the team. "But we came up against an excellent
team in the first round. I can't wait until we compete again

Rambam's
Debate Team earned second place overall at the Novice Debate Competition
hosted by The Yeshiva
of Flatbush on Thursday,
March 31st. This was a special debate reserved for team
members who had not yet participated in a debate this season.
The Resolve at issue for the debate was a timely argument about
steroids in baseball: “Due
to the controversy regarding steroids in baseball, alleged users
who
broke
individual
records,
won Hall
of Fame caliber statistics, and achieved these milestones between
1990 and 2002, should have their names/records distinguished with
an asterisk.”
The Rambam team of Jeffrey (Rocky) Reichman and Jeremy
Kugelman,
both freshmen, earned the honors of the second place team at the
competition. The team of Gabi Weinberg and Yehuda
Holzer, also
freshmen, won third place. As a school, Rambam
finished second behind the Stella K. Abraham High School for
Girls (SKA).
The other Rambam debaters who competed in the event
were Daniel Bauer, David
Orner, Shai Horowitz and Adam Kugelman.
The outstanding showing from these novice debaters bodes well
for their expected performance as their intellectual and presentation
skills mature.
Special thanks to Stephen Burg and Aryeh
Bernstein for their help
in preparing the novices for competition.
