Rambam To Host "The Great Debate"

On Tuesday, October 19th, Rambam will host a Kerry vs. Bush debate assembly for the students.

This debate features a passionate advocate to stand in for each candidate. They will present their case as to why their favored candidate deserves to be elected President of the United States this November.

The John F. Kerry supporter is Mr. Shay Marcus; the George W. Bush supporter is Mr. Heshy Walfish.

"Both men are politically active, passionate, outspoken and articulate advocates for their candidates," said Rosh Mesivta Rabbi Zev Meir Friedman, "But, importantly, they are also good friends. Our hope is to also demonstrate how you can disagree strongly with another person but still respect and be friends with your counterpart."

After presenting their case for their candidate, each man will be asked questions by a select panel of students. Later in the debate, the student-body at large will have an opportunity to question the Bush and Kerry supporters.

"It's a great way to get these important issues before the talmidim in a non-partisan yet provocative way," said Principal Rabbi Yotav Eliach.

Grant Park Outing

While the sophomores and juniors took the PSAT on Wednesday, October 13th, the freshmen and seniors had a fabulous outdoor outing at local Grant Park.

"We wanted to provide a testing atmosphere with no interruptions during the PSAT. We also turned off the automatic bells that normally mark the end of periods," said Principal Rabbi Eliach."Giving the students who were not testing this outing also served to promote achdus between the freshmen and seniors."

The sunny afternoon was filled with talmidim enjoying the still-warm weather playing softball, basketball, football, tennis and roller hockey. Student Activities Director Scott Firester said: "Now that we're getting into the first semester academically, it's important that the students get out and have a little fun together."

Rambam Shabbaton at Kutsher's

This shabbos parshas noach, sophomores, juniors and seniors will be spending an exciting and fulfilling shabbaton at Kutsher's Country Club in Monticello.

This is an eagerly anticipated annual event which promotes learning, achdus, ruach, sports and time spent with one another and the rebbeim outside of the classroom.

On Friday, October 15th, the talmidim will leave on busses from Rambam at 9:00 am after davening and breakfast. After arriving at Kutsher's and having lunch, the students will spend the afternoon playing sports including swimming, basketball and mini-golf.

Then it's Seudat Shabbat - Zemirot & Divrei Torah into the evening at our traditional Friday night tish.

On Shabbat morning, Rabbi Haar will deliver Divrei Torah during davening. After kiddush, Rabbi Eliach will give a shiur on the theme of V'Halachta B'Drachav. After a spirited lunch, the boys will have some rest time in the afternoon and re-assemble to partake of a menu of shiurim given by Rabbis Friedman, Haar, Cinamon and Ziskind. Then it's Seudat Shlisheet where everyone gets involved telling stories and singing. At night, it's back to sports, indoor games and late night swimming. The evening will be capped by a ruach-filled sumptuous melava malkeh.

After davening, a hearty breakfast and Divrei Torah Sunday morning, students will pack out and onto the bus. The busses, filled with tired but exhilarated students, will arrive back at Rambam at about 1:00 pm.

Rabbi Reichman's Weekly Shiur
Rabbi Heshy Reichman, Rosh Yeshiva at Yeshiva University, has started his advanced Talmud class for Rambam juniors and seniors held every Friday. This provides an opportunity for Rambam students to experience post-high school caliber shiurim even before they graduate.
Course Profile:
Zionism
Principal Rabbi Yotav Eliach teaches Zionism, a course that is an important part of the curriculum here at Rambam and a rare opportunity for juniors and seniors to learn the history of the State of Israel and how it is central to the lives of Jews today.

"Though the concept of Israel has been touched upon in one way or another to these young men since pre-school," said Rabbi Eliach, "This course is the first time in their young lives that the complete connection is made between The Tanach, Mishna, Gemara, Halacha, Jewish History, Jewish Philosophy, and the modern State of Israel."
