TAMIR
GOODMAN (cont...) (BACK
TO NEWSLETTER) Goodman
elected to return the scholarship rather than play
on Shabbos.
"While it appeared
that Tamir’s dreams of playing college ball
while remaining an observant Jew were quickly vanishing,
something that Tamir refers to as a 'miracle'
occurred. The basketball players and coaches at
Towson State
University, a Division 1 School near Baltimore,
heard about Tamir’s story and respected him
for sticking to his religious beliefs. The school
offered Tamir a scholarship and even managed to
change around the entire American East Conference
schedule so the majority of games would not conflict
with the Jewish Sabbath! As a Towson Tiger, Tamir
became the first orthodox Jew to play Division
1 college basketball. " (from http://www.tamirgoodman.com)
"Every single person here is loved by Hashem,"said
Goodman to the students. "Hashem has
given you the power to follow the talent he has
given you. Hashem will open all the doors
for you.”
After graduating from college, Goodman has moved
on to play professional ball in the Israeli basketball
league, the first observant Jew to do so.
After his inspirational message, Goodman then
headed for the gym and demonstrated a few simple
drills
that
any player can practice to improve their
game followed by a student dunking exhibition.
Now watch out for the Rambam Ravens basketball
in 05-06!
