NATIONAL
MERIT HONOREES (cont...) (BACK
TO NEWSLETTER) These
Rambam students qualified for the program because
they earned a Selection Index score of 202 or above
on the PSAT/NMSQT.
This enables the students to be referred to two
colleges or universities in the United States in
which they are especially interested. They can
do so online at http://www.collegeplans.org.
In addition, these students are now eligible to
become one of the 16,000 National Merit Program
Semifinalists, representing the top scorers in
each state, and the approximately 34,000 other high
scorers to be commended for their performance on
the test.
Semifinalists and Commended Students in the 2006
program will learn of their standing in September.
Semifinalists will then have the opportunity to
continue in the competition for about 8,200 Merit
Scholarship awards to be offered in 2006.
PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index
scores (the sum of critical reading, math and
writing skills scores) screen over a million
entrants and are used to designate those who
receive National Merit Program recognition. Each
year, Merit Scholarship winners are chosen from
the group of finalists on the basis of their
abilities, skills and accomplishments. It includes
the finalist's academic record, scores on the
PSAT/NMSQT and SAT, the student's essay, demonstrated
leadership and school recommendation. The approximately
10,000 awards will have a combined value of more
than $46 million.
