Study Skills (cont...) (BACK
TO NEWSLETTER)
In addition to learning the secrets of successful
test taking, study skills also help organize students,
teaches
how
to use time effectively, and helps students become
more effective listeners.
Most colleges, including the “Ivies,” recognize that these skills are essential to academic
success and provide similar services on their campus.
Regrettably, this is in response to the influx of high
school students who are not properly prepared for the
rigors of college life.
Rambam has adapted these methods to best meet the
needs of our freshman class.
At the end of the Study Skills course, ninth
graders participated in an anonymous evaluation of
the course, which revealed that 99% of these students
found it valuable and an overwhelming majority wished
it were longer. Students responded to the question, “I
have applied this study skill to this subject” in
the following ways:
- “I use time management at home and test
taking, pretty much in every class.”
- “I use note taking skills in all subjects.
I put the main idea of my notes on the left side
of my notes and the details on the
right side.”
- “In science class, the skill I use is to
memorize a group of words and make words to remember
it.”
The results are gratifying and it is yet another expression
of Rambam's innovative educational approach to raise
the level of academic achievement.
