"Kids
For Kids" Relief Effort(cont...) (BACK
TO NEWSLETTER)
"Our students' effort is but a microcosm of the
tremendous generosity being extended by the United
States, Western Europe, Japan, and Israel," said
Rabbi Yotav Eliach.
Although Israel has provided Sri
Lanka with medical supplies, food and medical experts
on the ground, a recent report in the BBC News suggested
that Israel had cancelled plans to send a large rescue
mission after Sri Lanka had objected to the military
composition of the team. The Sri Lankan Embassy in
Washington firmly denied the report, saying “the
generous assistance readily given by the Government
and people of Israel at this hour of need is highly
appreciated by the Government and people of Sri Lanka.”
“We’re
happy to have been able to contribute to setting the
record straight on this issue,” says Rabbi Eliach. “Now it’s
time for everybody to focus on the challenge before
us: helping the kids of Sri Lanka to overcome the effects
of this tragedy.”
Ambassador
Bernard Goonetilleke, the Acting Permanent
Representative of Sri Lanka, said: "At a tragic
time like what we have faced ten days ago, it is heartening
to see school
children such as those from the Rambam Mesivta High
School coming forward to assist victims of natural
disasters, thousands of miles away from their own homes.
Naturally, we are most grateful for their generosity
and encourage them, as well as members of the staff
of the school, to be involved in activities of this
nature in the future as well. "
Israeli Ambassador Dan Gillerman said, "This is
a time of immense tragedy, when humanity must unite in
its efforts to ease the suffering of so many. It is my
hope that this remarkable initiative by the students
of the Rambam Mesivta will inspire others to act with
the same goodwill, showing that empathy transcends all
borders and divides."
