YOM
HAZIKARON CELEBRATION (cont...) (BACK
TO NEWSLETTER) Rabbi
Eliach reminded students that some 21,000 Israeli
soldiers
have died since 1948 defending Eretz Israel.
Countless have been wounded or maimed as well.
He spoke of the numerous military cemetaries throughout
Israel where at the very moment of his spoken words
memorial services were being held.
Each of these soldiers had a life story, Eliach
reminded the talmidim, and he held aloft
a book about an orthodox solider from Efrat who
was chosen to represent the Israeli Army on an
official
state
visit to
Poland. This soldier went to the former death camp
in Auschwitz in full uniform and stood where his
grandparents had been murdered by the Nazis.
Unfortunately, this same soldier was killed soon
after fighting in Gaza.
"It would be wrong," he said, "to
celebrate Yom HaAtzmaut without recognizing
the tremendous sacrifices made by the members of tzahal."
